This project essentially tripled the size of the 302,000-square-foot Civic Plaza and included renovation of the existing spaces. Work also involved the renovation of the 2,600-seat symphony hall – a multi-use performing-arts theater completed in 2005 that is home to the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, the Arizona Opera, Ballet Arizona and Broadway touring companies. The two renovations were approved under two separate bonds but were scheduled simultaneously to realize economies of scale and minimize impact on arts patrons. This project required significant coordination of efforts with the adjacent light-rail project and the need to minimize disruption to the city’s vital downtown environment, while still allowing the project to be completed on time and on schedule. Kitchell previously provided project management services to the Phoenix Civic Plaza in 1985 for its first expansion and again in 1995 for the refurbishment and modernization project.
